Why Obtain PMP Certification

The Project Management Institute (PMI) prepares project management professionals for greater responsibilities by certifying them through a process that enables them to become Project Management Professionals (PMPs). Certification as a PMP is a huge achievement for any project management professional as the process of certification is quite rigorous.

The PMP certification is available for individuals in project management through a testing program. To qualify for PMP certification, one needs to already be carrying out project management first. The applicant is required to hold a leadership role such as leading and directing projects. The applicant is also required to hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification. For professionals holding a Bachelor’s degree to qualify to sit the examination that will get them certified as PMPs, they are also required to have obtained at least three years experience as project managers. The PMP certification is obtained after an individual sits and passes the examination offered by the PMI. The examination consists of two hundred multiple choice questions. The examination lasts four hours although most professionals sit it in a much shorter time. To pass the examination, the candidate must answer at least one hundred and six questions correctly.

To discourage people who are not completely committed to project management as a career, the PMI charges a rather high fee for the examination. For registered members, the examination fee is $405 while non-members are required to pay $555. This makes many people find it more sensible to register as members first before taking the examination. The annual registration fee is $119.
