Who Qualifies For PMI Certification?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) certifies professionals in project management by offering them credentials that grant such professionals global recognition. PMI certification is therefore sought by all project management professionals who wish to stand out from the crowd. While initial certification is a huge step for any project management professional, the PMI makes sure that such professionals do not become complacent by requiring that they stay up to date. The PMI has two groups of individuals it certifies depending on one’s level of education and experience in project management. To qualify for certification, the applicant needs to have at least a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification. In addition, the applicant is required to have worked in project management for at least 4,500 hours – which is equivalent to three years – in a senior position. The project management experience should have been acquired by the applicant directing or managing projects. Moreover, the applicant is required to have acquired a minimum of thirty five hours of formal class room tuition in project management.

The second category of project management professionals that the PMI certifies is professionals without a Bachelor’s degree but who possess a high school diploma or some other post-secondary school qualification. To apply for certification, such individuals will need to have acquired at least five years experience in project management at a managerial level. They are also required to obtain formal classroom tuition for at least thirty five hours.

To obtain the global recognition that PMI certification grants an applicant, one has to pass an examination. The examination itself is set to the highest standards and reflects the latest trends and terminology in project management. The candidate has to answer two hundred questions in a period of four hours and get at least one hundred and six of them correct in order to get certified.
